The short answer

Concrete Patio Contractors in Kenosha

We pour new and replacement concrete patios in Kenosha, plain, colored or stamped, over a base we dig out and compact before any concrete arrives.

Most of a patio's life is decided below the surface: excavating to the right depth, placing the base material and compacting it thoroughly. The finish is the part you choose, and it goes on a slab built the same way every time, behind a home or outside a business.

Plain
A "broom finish", the textured, non-slip surface for outdoor slabs
Colored
"Integral color" mixed through the concrete, not a stain on top
Stamped
Color and texture pressed in to look like stone, brick or slate

What's included

What our patio work covers

We remove the old surface, build the base, set the forms, pour and finish the patio, and cut the joints, so one crew answers for the whole slab.

We quote the whole job before we start, with no surprise charges after.

Every patio we pour includes these parts, in this order:

  • BaseThe old slab or sod comes out, the topsoil goes with it, and a gravel base is compacted in layers.
  • FormsBoards staked to the patio's shape and slope, with isolation joint material wherever it meets the house, a stoop or the garage slab.
  • Concrete"Air-entrained" concrete, the freeze-resistant mix the Portland Cement Association describes for exterior slabs, with fiber in the mix or steel where the slab crosses backfill.
  • FinishScreeded, bull floated and edged, then a broom finish, integral color or a stamped pattern once the bleed water is gone.
  • JointsControl joints, the "cut lines" in a slab, saw-cut the first day to about a quarter of its depth so cracks form where we planned them.
  • SealedA sealer when you want one, to slow the salt and water damage behind flaking, or "scaling".

We clean up when the work is done.

What it costs

How concrete patio work is priced

A concrete patio is priced by its size, its design, how easily we can reach the spot, and the finish on top.

A plain broom-finished slab costs less than a stamped one in several colors and patterns, and curves cost more labor than straight edges, though little more material. A small patio often carries a "short-load charge", the small-job fee a ready-mix plant adds when a pour is under the truck's minimum load.

That is why we measure before we quote. The ranges on the right are typical for the city; the exact figure for your yard comes from the site visit.

Step by step

The patio process, step by step

We mark the footprint, strip the topsoil, compact the base in layers, set forms and isolation joints, then pour, finish and cure, in these six steps:

  1. Mark the footprint

We mark the patio's outline on the ground before we price it, so you can stand on it with a table and chairs and catch a patio that would come out too small.

  2. Strip the topsoil

The old patio or sod comes out, and the topsoil goes with it before any base goes in, dug to the depth the base and slab need.

  3. Compact the base in layers

A plate compactor only packs so deep at a time, so the gravel base goes in and gets compacted in several lifts.

  4. Set forms and isolation joints

Forms set the shape and slope. Isolation joint material, the "gap at the house", goes wherever the slab meets the wall, a stoop or a garage slab.

  5. Pour, screed and float

The concrete is screeded, bull floated and edged, then left until the bleed water leaves the surface.

  6. Finish, cut and cure

We put on the finish, saw-cut the control joints the first day, and spray curing compound so the slab holds its moisture while it cures.

Before the pour

Plans to settle before the pour

You should tell us about a hot tub, an outdoor kitchen or a pergola before we pour, because each one changes how thick the slab is and where the footings go.

Once the concrete is in, those changes mean cutting the patio. Tell us about any of these before we price the job:

  • A hot tub. A heavy load on one spot changes the thickness and the reinforcement under it.
  • An outdoor kitchen. The counters and grill need their weight carried, and the slab is planned around them.
  • A pergola. Its posts may need footings poured with the patio.
  • Curved edges. We bend flexible forms for curves, which adds labor but little material.
  • New backfill. Where the slab spans backfilled ground, it gets steel in place of fiber alone.
